Telmo Rodriguez’s Yjar 2017“a cult wine in the making”, according to Jane Anson, has been released internationally for £924 per 12×75 case.

  • Telmo Rodriguez’s Yjar 2017 has been released internationally for £924 per 12×75.
  • The wine has received 98-points from Jane Anson and 96-points from Luis Gutiérrez.
  • This is the first top-end Rioja distributed through La Place de Bordeaux.

Telmo Rodriguez’s latest wine, Yjar 2017, has been released for €58 per bottle ex-négociant. The wine is being offered internationally for £924 per 12×75 case.

This is the first vintage of Yjar – and one of the few Spanish wines currently sold through the La Place de Bordeaux distribution network. Just 7,000 bottles were produced.

Critical opinion

The wine received 96-points from The Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutiérrez. “It’s a wine that transcends the vintage, with spicy notes, a complex and changing nose, really harmonious, serious, with super sleek tannins, seamless with a polished mouthfeel with a chalky finish,” he observed.

Jane Anson awarded it 98-points and advised that this is an “outstanding first outing that you should be following”. She also named Yjar as the wine to buy this autumn.

Market positioning

Yjar, produced at Remelluri, is a separate project to the flagship domain and “closer, perhaps, to the style of the personal wines from Telmo Rodríguez,” according to Gutiérrez.

Telmo Rodríguez’s wines have seen some, albeit limited, secondary market activity since 2018. His most active wine has been Beatas 2014 (with a Market Price of £2,263 per 12×75), though his Ribera del Duero Matallana 2001 and Altos Lanzaga 2002 have also traded.

As recently explored in the article, “top traded wines in Spain“, the country’s fine wines have a dedicated and enthusiastic following, but their share of the secondary market remains very small – just 0.9%. It remains to be seen what an expanded distribution network might mean for Spain’s secondary market, and Yjar in particular.
